Who Can Name My Company in India?

Five kinds of people can name your company in India: you, with or without an AI name generator; a freelance namer or copywriter; a generalist branding agency; a specialist naming agency; or a trade marks attorney, who clears a name rather than creating one. They are not interchangeable.

The difference that matters is not who produces the longest list of ideas. It is who checks which names survive the Indian Trade Marks Registry in your classes, carry no unwanted meaning in Hindi or the regional languages you sell into, and still have a usable domain. This page compares all five plainly, including the options that are not us. Identity Makers is a specialist brand naming agency in Bhilwara, Rajasthan, naming Indian companies since 2014.

Naming it yourself, with or without an AI tool

Free, immediate, and perfectly viable for a business in an uncrowded category selling to a domestic audience. Generating ideas is no longer the hard part: a founder with a generator will produce a longer list than any agency presents. What you do not get is the filter. Which candidates survive the register in your classes, which carry an unwanted meaning in a language you sell into, and which leave room for the products you have not launched yet. If those risks are low for you, this is a sensible choice.

A freelance namer or copywriter

Typically a few thousand rupees to around twenty thousand. You get a human sensibility applied to your brief, which is a real step up from unfiltered generation. How much trademark and language screening is included varies a great deal, so ask about it directly rather than assuming.

A generalist branding agency

Here the name arrives as one deliverable inside a larger identity project. That makes sense when you need the logo, colours and guidelines as well. The weakness is order of work: names are often generated first and checked for availability afterwards, which is how a favourite shortlist collapses weeks into the project.

A specialist naming agency

This is what we do. Naming is the whole engagement, not a line item. Screening runs alongside generation rather than after it, so the names you see have already passed the first trademark, language and domain checks. At Identity Makers that means 40 to 60 candidates, screened down to a shortlist you can actually register.

A trade marks attorney: clears names, does not create them

An attorney gives the legal opinion on whether a name can be registered and files the application. You need one whichever route you take to create the name. What an attorney does not normally do is invent names, so this is a partner to the other four options rather than an alternative.

Which option is right for your company?

  • If you sell only locally, in an uncrowded category, and can live with renaming later, naming it yourself is reasonable.
  • If you will raise investment, sell across India or export, or plan several products under one name, the cost of a name that fails registration is far higher than the cost of screening it properly.
  • If you need the full visual identity at the same time, ask any agency to show you when in the process names are checked.
  • Whoever creates the name, have a trade marks attorney clear and file it.

FAQs

How much does it cost to get a company named in India?

From free if you do it yourself, to a few thousand rupees for a freelancer, to Rs 12,000 to Rs 90,000 for our published naming packages. Larger agencies charge more.

Is company name approval the same as a trademark?

No. Registering a company name and registering a trademark are separate processes. A name can be accepted as a company name and still conflict with an existing trademark, which is why trademark screening matters.

Can you name a company that will sell outside India?

Yes. We work with companies selling into the US, UK, UAE, Canada, Australia and Singapore, and the language checks follow your markets.

Do I still need a trade marks attorney?

Yes. Our screening narrows the field to names likely to clear. An attorney gives the formal opinion and files the application.
