What is a brand naming agency in India?
A brand naming agency in India is a specialist firm that develops a company or product name through a structured process — strategic brief, systematic generation, linguistic and cultural screening, trademark availability search at the Indian Trade Marks Registry, and domain verification — and hands you a screened shortlist you can defend and own. Identity Makers has worked this way since 2014, generating 40 to 60 candidates per project and delivering a screened shortlist in 4 to 10 days from ₹12,000.
This page covers naming for the Indian market specifically: the Registry, Hindi and regional-language checks, script questions, and .in domains. If you are naming for the USA, UK, Canada, Australia or the UAE, our global brand naming agency page carries that framing and USD pricing. If you are still deciding who to hire, our guide to evaluating a naming agency covers the questions to ask and the red flags worth walking away from. For the process itself, step by step, read the complete brand naming guide.

A Brand Naming Agency in India That Engineers Names, Never Brainstorms Them
Identity Makers is a specialist brand naming agency in India, working with founders since 2014. Brand naming is one of our two core disciplines — alongside brand identity design — which means naming here runs through a rigorous, repeatable process, not a lucky guess in a meeting room. A name that works in India must survive the Indian Trade Marks Registry, sound right across Hindi, English, and regional contexts, and hold up when you expand abroad.
Strategic Naming Brief
Discovery on positioning, audience, category dynamics, and constraints — before a single name is generated.
Name Generation
40-60 candidates per project across coined, evocative, descriptive, and invented routes.
Linguistic & Cultural Checks
Sound, meaning, and memorability across markets — from Mumbai to Manchester to Manhattan.
Trademark Search
Availability screening across the Indian Trade Marks Registry and your target international markets.
Domain Verification
.com, .in, .co availability plus social handle checks and SEO signal analysis for finalists.
Verbal Identity System
Tagline development, voice guidelines, and messaging pillars. The name is one asset; verbal identity is the system.
What does a brand naming agency in India actually deliver?
A naming engagement here produces documents, not a suggestion made out loud in a meeting. You receive a written strategic naming brief that records positioning, audience, category dynamics and the constraints the name has to live inside — the document every later decision is measured against. You receive 40 to 60 candidates per project, generated across coined, evocative, descriptive and invented routes rather than pulled from a single stylistic register, because a shortlist drawn from one register is a shortlist of near-identical options.
You receive a linguistic and cultural screening pass covering sound, meaning and memorability across the markets you actually sell in. You receive a trademark availability search across the Indian Trade Marks Registry and any international registers your expansion plan touches. You receive domain verification covering .com, .in and .co availability alongside social handle checks. And you receive a final shortlist with written rationale: why each surviving name works, what it signals, and where it is weakest — because you should know the downside of a name before you commit to it.
On the Name + Identity and End-to-End tiers you also receive a verbal identity system: tagline development, voice guidelines and messaging pillars. The name is one asset. The verbal identity is the system that keeps every later piece of copy sounding like the same company.
How does trademark screening work at the Indian Trade Marks Registry?
Screening during naming is a filter, not a legal clearance. The purpose is to remove candidates that are obviously unavailable before you fall in love with one of them, so that the names surviving into your shortlist have a realistic path to registration rather than a decorative one.
We search the public register for the mark itself and for near-identical and phonetically similar marks in the classes that matter to your business — which means the class conversation has to happen during the brief, not after you have chosen a name. A name that is clear in one class can be blocked in another, and Indian applications are frequently opposed on phonetic similarity rather than identical spelling, so a candidate that merely looks different on the page is not automatically safe.
The Registry's own public search sits at the Trade Marks Registry public search portal, which now requires an OTP login before you can run a query — worth knowing before you plan to check candidates yourself. Our screening pass covers this so your shortlist arrives already filtered.
What screening does not do is clear you to file. Formal clearance, opposition strategy and prosecution are a trademark attorney's work, and we will tell you plainly when a candidate needs one before you commit budget to it. If you want the mechanics in more depth, our trademark search guide covers what each stage of a search does and does not establish.
How do you check a name across Hindi and India's regional languages?
India is not one linguistic market, and a name that tests cleanly in English and Hindi can still land badly in the state where most of your revenue is. The disaster check is the pass that catches this: we read each surviving candidate aloud against the languages your customers actually speak — Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Punjabi and Urdu among them — looking for unintended meanings, unfortunate homophones, religious or caste connotations, and words that are merely awkward to say.
Three failure modes come up repeatedly. The first is the accidental meaning: a coined name that is neutral in English resolves to something crude, comic or sacred in a regional language. The second is the pronunciation split, where a name is stressed differently in the north and the south and stops being one name — customers who say it differently do not recall it as the same brand, which quietly costs you word of mouth. The third is transliteration drift: a name that has no stable spelling once people start writing it in a non-Latin script fragments your search traffic across variants you never chose.
We flag all three during screening and tell you which regions each risk is concentrated in, so the trade-off is yours to make rather than a surprise after launch.
What do Devanagari and multi-script considerations change about a name?
If your brand will ever appear in Devanagari or another Indian script — on packaging, on regional signage, in a state-language campaign — the name has to survive that transition, and some names simply do not. Sounds that are distinct in English can collapse into the same character in Devanagari, so two candidates that read as clearly different in Latin script become the same word on a hoarding in Nagpur.
Length behaves differently too. A name that fits comfortably in a Latin wordmark can grow noticeably when set in Devanagari, which matters for a logo lockup, a bottle label or a shopfront where horizontal space is fixed. Names built around consonant clusters that English handles easily often need more characters and more width once transliterated.
Our own portfolio includes this problem solved deliberately: the Itrani wordmark was built Devanagari-inspired from the start rather than retrofitted, which is the difference between a name that works in two scripts and a name that works in one and is tolerated in the other. If a second script is anywhere in your five-year plan, it belongs in the brief on day one, not in a redesign later.
Should you secure .in, .co.in or .com?
Domain verification on every project covers .com, .in and .co availability alongside social handle checks, and the answer to which one matters most depends on where the business is going rather than where it is now.
If you sell only in India and expect to keep doing so, a clean .in or .co.in is a perfectly credible primary domain and is very often available when the matching .com is long gone — which is exactly why some strong candidates stay viable in India that would be dead on arrival for a US-first brand. If you intend to raise from international investors, sell abroad, or list on global marketplaces, the .com carries weight you will eventually want, and a candidate whose .com is held by an active business elsewhere is a candidate we will flag rather than quietly leave on the shortlist.
The practical position for most founders naming in India is to secure the .in and the .com together where both are obtainable, and to treat an unobtainable .com as a real constraint on the name rather than a detail to solve later. We verify all of this on finalists during the project, so the shortlist you review is a list of names you can actually operate under.

Start End-to-EndHow much does a brand naming agency in India cost?
We publish three tiers and they are the prices above, not a starting point for a quote. Brand Name is ₹12,000 and covers the foundational naming work: strategic brief, 40 to 60 candidates, trademark and domain checks, and a final shortlist, delivered in 4 to 10 days. Popular is ₹40,000 and adds the visual and verbal identity around the name — logo and visual identity, verbal identity system, and brand guidelines — in 15 to 30 days. End-to-End is ₹90,000 and adds packaging design, a full collateral suite and comprehensive guidelines, in 30 to 45 days.
What moves a project within its tier is scope rather than negotiation: the number of markets the name has to clear, whether a second script is in play, how many stakeholders sit in the review, and how quickly the brief is signed off. Nothing in these tiers covers formal trademark filing or attorney fees, which are billed by your attorney and are genuinely outside our scope.
Naming rates from India are lower than US and UK rates for the ordinary reason that cost bases differ, not because the process is shorter. The brief, the generation volume, the screening passes and the written rationale are the same work our global naming clients buy in dollars. If you want to see how these tiers sit against wider market bands before you decide, the agency evaluation guide lays out the tiers the market as a whole is organised into.
How long does a naming project in India take?
Four to ten days for foundational naming, fifteen to thirty days when identity is included, and thirty to forty-five days for the end-to-end system. Those are working ranges, and the variable that moves them most is not us — it is how fast the brief gets signed and how fast the shortlist gets reviewed. A naming project that stalls almost always stalls at a client decision point, so the fastest thing you can do for your own timeline is decide who has final say before the project starts.
What do you need from us to start?
Less than most founders expect, and more than a one-line description. We need your positioning — who you sell to, what you sell, and who you are trying not to be mistaken for. We need the categories and classes the name has to be clear in. We need the markets and languages that matter, including any state-language or second-script plans. We need to know who signs off, because a shortlist reviewed by a committee that was never briefed is a shortlist that gets rejected for reasons nobody wrote down. And we need your honest constraints: existing sub-brands, a parent company name, a domain you have already bought.
If you would rather arrive with that already written, our naming brief template walks through exactly what to prepare.
Who is this naming service for?
Founders and teams naming something they intend to keep — a company, a product line, a spin-off, or a rebrand of something that has outgrown its original name. It suits businesses whose name has to work in more than one Indian language, businesses planning to move from a domestic market to an international one, and businesses that have been burned once by choosing a name that could not be registered. It is not the right fit if you want a list of options tomorrow with no brief and no screening, because that is a different product and we do not sell it.

Brand Naming Agency FAQs
How much does brand naming cost in India?
Professional brand naming in India ranges from ₹12,000 to ₹90,000+ depending on scope. Our foundational naming package starts at ₹12,000 ($199) including name generation, trademark search, and domain verification, delivered in 4-10 days. Complete naming plus identity packages start at ₹40,000.
What does a brand naming agency actually do?
A brand naming agency develops your name through a structured process: strategic brief, systematic name generation across categories, linguistic screening, trademark availability search, domain verification, and often tagline and verbal identity development. The output is a protectable, ownable name — not just a creative suggestion.
How long does the brand naming process take?
Our standard brand naming engagement takes 4-10 days from brief to final shortlist. Complete naming plus visual identity projects take 15-45 days depending on the package tier.
Do you check trademark availability for brand names?
Yes. Every naming project includes trademark screening across the Indian Trade Marks Registry and your target international markets (USA, UK, EU, UAE and others), plus domain and social handle verification — preventing the costly rebrand that follows an unprotectable name.
Can you name a business that will operate internationally?
Yes — this is our specialty. Our linguistic and cultural screening checks how each candidate sounds and reads across markets, so a name chosen in India works equally well in New York, London, Sydney, or Dubai.
