Bengaluru invents its names. That is a deliberate choice.
Most Indian cities name from heritage — a founder's surname, a family deity, a place. Bengaluru does something different, and it is worth understanding why.
Zerodha is Sanskrit rodha — barrier — fused to the English zero. Zero barriers. It is a positioning statement compressed into seven letters, it clears trademarks because it did not exist before, and the domain was available because nobody else had built the word. That is naming as engineering.
Swiggy means nothing. That is the point. An invented, phonetically soft, two-syllable word with no prior register entries, no linguistic baggage across twenty-two languages, and instant availability. Meaningless names are underrated: they carry whatever equity you build into them and nothing you did not choose.
MTR went the opposite way and proves the same rule from the other end. Mavalli Tiffin Rooms, 1924 — a name so tied to place and time that it could only belong to one business. It survived because it was specific, not because it was clever.
Café Coffee Day owned a sentence rather than a word: a lot can happen over coffee. The brand asset was the promise, not the mark. When a category is undifferentiated, the tagline does the naming work.
Four brands, four different naming strategies, all from one city. What they share is that the verbal decision preceded the visual one, and none of them could have been fixed later with a redesign.
These are analyses of brands we have not worked on. We include them because they map the naming logic this city rewards — which is the logic we bring to a brief.
Why naming a Bengaluru company is a global problem
Most Bengaluru founders are not naming for Bengaluru. They are naming for a market that includes San Francisco, London and Singapore, often before their first hundred customers.
That changes the brief entirely. A name here has to pass four filters simultaneously:
- Trademark clearance in multiple jurisdictions, not just India — and in the specific classes you will trade in.
- A credible domain. Not a
.comat any cost, but something a serious buyer will not misread or mistype. - Pronunciation across accents. The name will be said aloud by people who have never heard an Indian speaker say it.
- Category collision. Software is the most saturated naming category on earth. Sounding like an existing company is as damaging as being one.
Very few candidate names survive all four. Most founders discover this after choosing. We run these filters before anything reaches you — which is why the shortlist you see is short.
What we build for Bengaluru companies
Brand Naming
Multi-jurisdiction trademark screening, international linguistic checking, domain clearance, all before presentation.
Brand Identity
Systems designed at icon size first and scaled up, because that is where a digital brand is actually encountered.
Brand Collateral and Social Creatives
Investor decks, collateral and platform content that hold one identity.
The Bengaluru-specific mistake we see most
Founders name for the round they are raising rather than the company they are building.
A name that signals "AI-native" in 2026 dates the way "e-" and "i-" prefixes dated. A name built around a single product becomes a constraint the moment the roadmap widens — and in this city, roadmaps widen fast. The naming brief should be the company's ten-year scope, not this quarter's positioning.
This is the one decision you cannot iterate out of. Change a logo and your customers barely register it. Change a name and you restart.
How we work with Bangalore companies
We actively serve clients across Bengaluru — briefings, brand workshops and presentations in person, with the same senior team carrying the work through.
We take a deliberately limited number of projects each month, which means the people who scope your brief are the people who do the work. Over more than a decade our work has spanned Cipla, TVS, NTPC, CavinKare, Mitsubishi, GAIL, Cosmo Films, Raymond, the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, the Indian Embassy in Brussels and Rotary.
Frequently asked questions
Do you work with startups across Bangalore?
Yes. We work with founders throughout Bengaluru, with in-person briefings, brand workshops and presentations, and continuous collaboration through the project.
How much does startup branding cost in Bangalore?
Individual assets — a brand name, logo, or package design — start at ₹12,000 + GST each. Full identity engagements start at ₹24,000, with ₹40,000 the tier most startups choose and ₹90,000 for an end-to-end identity system covering naming, identity, guidelines and collateral.
Can you name a company that will launch internationally?
Yes. We screen trademark classes across relevant jurisdictions, test the name linguistically beyond Indian languages, and clear domains before presenting. Most candidate names fail at least one of these filters, which is exactly why we test before you choose.
Why do invented names work well for startups?
An invented word has no prior trademark entries, no linguistic baggage across languages, and usually an available domain. It carries only the meaning you build into it. The trade-off is that you must fund that meaning — an invented name explains nothing on its own.
How long does a full startup identity take?
Fifteen to thirty days for our most-chosen tier, thirty to forty-five days for a complete end-to-end identity system. A standalone name takes four to ten days including clearance.
Do you work with pre-revenue startups?
Yes. Naming and identity cost least to get right before launch and most to fix afterwards.
