What does a packaging design agency in India do?
A packaging design agency in India designs the pack a product is sold in, from the structure (box, pouch, tube, bottle or sleeve) to the graphics on every panel, the mandatory declarations, and the print-ready dielines your printer works from. Identity Makers has designed packaging this way since 2014, inside our visual identity discipline, with packaging design starting at ₹12,000 plus GST, delivered in 4 to 8 days.
This page covers what a packaging project delivers, how Indian labelling rules shape the artwork, how to choose a format, how multi-SKU ranges stay one brand, and what packaging design costs. If the brand behind the pack is not settled yet, start with our brand identity agency in India page.

Packaging design for global consumer brands
Identity Makers is a specialist packaging design agency serving consumer brands in the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, UAE, and beyond since 2014. Packaging sits inside our core discipline of visual identity design, which means every pack is engineered from positioning and shelf-competition research, never decorated in isolation. Our packaging design services cover the complete journey: category audit, structural design, graphic systems, statutory compliance, production-ready dielines, and multi-SKU architectures that scale as your range grows.
FDA, EU, and GCC labeling standards built into the artwork from the first panel.
Print-ready artwork with dielines in AI and PDF formats matched to your printer's process, plus 3D mockup visuals for marketing and a packaging style guide for future SKUs.
What Does a Packaging Design Project Actually Deliver?
Six stages, each ending in a decision you sign off. Packaging mistakes are expensive because they are discovered after the print run, so the checking happens before it.
Category & Shelf Audit
Where the pack will be seen, what it sits next to, and what the category's visual conventions are, so we know which to follow and which to break.
Structure & Format
The right container for the product, the channel and the budget: carton, pouch, tube, jar, bottle or sleeve, with size and material agreed with your printer.
Panel Hierarchy
What the buyer must read first, second and third on the front panel, and what moves to the back and sides. Most packs fail here by saying everything at once.
Graphic System
Colour, typography, imagery and the brand device applied to the pack, designed so the next SKU can be added without redesigning the first.
Declarations & Compliance
Mandatory text, symbols, barcodes and batch areas placed into the artwork from the start, not squeezed in after the design is approved.
Dielines & Print Files
Print-ready artwork on your printer's dieline with bleed, colour profiles and finishing layers, plus 3D mockups for marketing and listings.
What has to go on a pack in India?
Packaged goods sold in India carry mandatory declarations, and they take up real space. Designing them in late is the most common reason a beautiful pack becomes cramped at the artwork stage. We plan the back and side panels around them from the first layout.
For most packaged commodities, the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules require declarations such as the manufacturer, packer or importer details, the common name of the product, net quantity, the retail sale price (MRP) inclusive of all taxes, the month and year of manufacture, and consumer care details. Food products add FSSAI requirements, including the FSSAI logo and licence number, the vegetarian or non-vegetarian symbol, the ingredient list, nutrition information and allergen declarations where applicable. Cosmetics, supplements and other regulated categories carry their own rules.
We build these elements into the artwork and check placement and legibility before files go to print. Your regulatory advisor or quality team confirms the final wording for your specific product, because requirements depend on the category and change over time.
Which packaging format should you choose?
The format is decided by the channel as much as the product. A pack that has to win on a retail shelf needs a strong front face and good stacking. A pack that ships in a courier box needs to survive transit and make the unboxing feel considered. A pack sold mainly through marketplaces and quick-commerce apps is first seen as a small thumbnail on a phone, so the product name and the main variant cue must read at that size.
Material and finish follow from there: rigid boxes and premium cartons for gifting and higher price points, flexible pouches for food and refills, tubes and airless bottles for skincare. Finishes such as foil, embossing, spot UV and soft-touch lamination add cost per unit, so we specify them where they earn their place rather than everywhere.
How Do Multi-SKU Ranges Stay One Brand?
A range fails in one of two ways: every variant looks the same and the buyer picks the wrong one, or every variant looks different and the range stops reading as one brand. The fix is a visual architecture decided before the second SKU is designed.
What Never Changes
Logo position, typography, layout grid and the brand device stay fixed on every pack, so the range reads as one family from across the aisle.
What Signals the Variant
One controlled variable, usually colour or illustration, changes per flavour, size or skin type, so the buyer finds the right pack in a second.
What Signals the Tier
Premium and everyday lines need a visible step between them: a finish, a material or a typographic change, never a different brand.
What the Variants Are Called
Variant and range names are part of the pack. A clear naming convention stops the range becoming a list of unrelated words. See our naming practice.
What Comes Next
The system leaves space for SKUs that do not exist yet, so a launch next year slots in without redesigning the range.
Packaging Style Guide
A short guide recording the rules, so your team, printer or a future agency can add variants that still belong.
Who Can Design Your Packaging?
Four realistic routes, with different strengths. The right one depends on how many SKUs you have and how much the pack has to sell on its own.
Your Printer's Designer
Often free with the print order and technically correct on dielines. The design is usually adapted from what the printer already has, so it rarely stands out on shelf.
A Freelance Designer
A good option for a single SKU on a tight budget. Ask about dieline experience, compliance knowledge and whether they will deal with your printer directly.
A Generalist Marketing Agency
Convenient if they already run your campaigns. Packaging is a specialist craft with structural and print constraints, so check their packaging portfolio specifically.
A Packaging Specialist Inside an Identity Studio
What we do. The pack is designed as part of your brand system, with shelf research, compliance and multi-SKU architecture built in from the first panel.
How much does packaging design cost in India?
Our Package Design package starts at ₹12,000 plus GST ($199 for international clients), covering the target-audience focus, a concept in line with your brand language, print-ready and open files, and print mockups. For a new brand, End to End starts at ₹90,000 and combines packaging design with brand name options, logo design concepts, stationery, brochure and website or app design.
Across the market, three things move the price: the number of SKUs, whether a structural format has to be developed or an existing stock format is used, and whether the pack is designed as part of a brand system or in isolation. Additional SKUs in an established system cost less to design than the first, because the rules are already set.
How long does a packaging design project take?
Four to eight days for the design and artwork. Printer proofing and prototype approval run in parallel with your printer's own schedule. Packaging designed alongside a full brand identity follows the 15 to 45 day identity timeline.
What do you need from us to start?
The product and its exact dimensions or your printer's dieline, the mandatory text for your category, your brand assets if they exist, the channels you sell through, three competitor packs you are compared with, and your printer's specifications if you already have one. Samples of the physical product help more than photographs.
Do you coordinate with our printer?
Yes. We work to your printer's dieline and process, whether offset, flexo or digital, and review proofs and prototypes with you before final approval, so what ships matches what was designed.
Redesigning an existing pack without losing your buyers
A redesign is riskier than a first design, because your current buyers already know the pack. If they cannot find it on the shelf or in an app, they buy the product next to it. So before we change anything, we audit what the existing pack already owns: the colour buyers search for, the shape they recognise, the logo position, the variant cues they use to pick their flavour or size.
Each element is then kept, refined or replaced, and the reason is written down. Most strong redesigns keep one or two recognisable assets and fix everything around them: a cluttered front panel, weak variant signals, late-added declarations, or a range that has drifted apart over the years. If the brand itself needs to change, that decision comes first, through our brand identity agency in India work, and the pack follows it.
What you sign off before anything goes to print
Packaging errors are found after the print run, when they are most expensive to fix. So every project has fixed checkpoints where you approve one decision before the next one starts:
- Direction: the concept route, chosen against your competitors' packs, not on its own.
- Front panel: hierarchy and readability at shelf distance and at phone-thumbnail size.
- Full artwork: every panel, with declarations, barcodes and batch areas in place.
- Mockups: 3D visuals to check proportions and how the range looks together.
- Printer proof: colour, dieline fit and finishes, checked against your printer's proof or prototype before final approval.
Your regulatory advisor or quality team confirms the final wording of mandatory text at the artwork stage. We place it, check that it is legible, and keep it consistent across SKUs.
Materials, finishes and sustainability
Material is chosen for the product first: what it must protect, how long it must last, and how it travels. Then come the channel and the price point. Brands increasingly ask for packaging that is easier to recycle, such as mono-material pouches, uncoated cartons or fewer mixed layers. These choices change how colour prints and which finishes are possible, so we decide them with your printer at the start rather than after the design is approved. Plastic packaging can also carry extended producer responsibility obligations in India. Your compliance team confirms what applies to your product.
What else moves the price of a packaging project
On top of the SKU count, structural work and system-versus-standalone already covered above, four things change the scope:
- Concept routes: exploring several distinct directions takes longer than refining one agreed direction.
- Illustration: custom illustration is separate creative work from the pack layout. Product photographs are supplied by you.
- Languages and markets: bilingual packs, regional-language variants and export labelling need their own artwork versions.
- Pack sizes: one design adapted across several sizes or formats still needs separate artwork for each dieline.
Print finishes such as foil or embossing mainly affect your cost per unit with the printer, not the design fee. We flag that cost early so it is a deliberate choice.

A complete packaging system: category and shelf research, structural format recommendation, panel-by-panel graphic design, statutory compliance elements (MRP, barcodes, ingredient declarations), print-ready artwork with dielines, and printer coordination support through prototype approval.
Do you handle food packaging compliance like FSSAI?
Yes. Our packaging artwork incorporates FSSAI declarations, Legal Metrology requirements, nutritional panels, veg/non-veg marks, and barcode placement per Indian regulations, reviewed before files go to print.
Can you design packaging for a full product range?
Yes. Multi-SKU systems are our specialty. We design a scalable visual architecture where each variant is instantly distinguishable yet unmistakably one brand.
Do you work with our printer?
Yes. We deliver dielines and print specifications matched to your printer's process (offset, flexo, or digital), and review prototypes with you before final approval so what ships matches what was designed.
How do we start a packaging project?
Book a free consultation or fill the enquiry form. We respond within 24 hours and most packaging projects begin within the same week.
How much does professional packaging design cost?
Our packaging design services start at $199 per SKU including structural direction, complete graphic design, market-appropriate labeling elements, and production-ready dielines, delivered in 4-8 days.
Can you handle labeling requirements for the US, EU, or GCC markets?
We design artwork to accommodate your market's labeling standards, such as FDA nutrition panels, EU mandatory information, GCC bilingual requirements, working alongside your regulatory advisor who confirms final compliance.
What mandatory information must be printed on packaging in India?
Most packaged commodities need Legal Metrology declarations such as manufacturer or packer details, net quantity, MRP inclusive of taxes, month and year of manufacture, and consumer care details. Food products also need FSSAI elements such as the licence number, veg or non-veg symbol, ingredients and nutrition information. Your regulatory advisor confirms final wording.
How do you keep a multi-SKU range consistent?
We fix the constants (logo position, typography, layout and brand device) and let one controlled variable, usually colour or illustration, signal each variant, then record the rules in a packaging style guide.
Do you design packaging for e-commerce and quick-commerce?
Yes. For marketplace and quick-commerce sales the pack is first seen as a small thumbnail, so we test the front panel at that size and design for transit and unboxing as well as shelf display.
Can you redesign our existing packaging?
Yes. We start with an audit of what your current pack already owns with buyers, keep the elements they recognise, and fix the rest, so loyal customers can still find you.
Do you design packaging for regional languages or export markets?
Yes. We prepare separate artwork versions for bilingual, regional-language or export packs, working alongside your regulatory advisor, who confirms the mandatory wording for each market.
Do you provide product photography for packs?
No. You supply the product photographs, and we tell you early what the design needs from them, such as angles, background and resolution. Where the concept needs custom illustration, it is scoped and quoted separately from the pack layout.
When do we receive the final packaging files?
Once full payment is made, we hand over the final print-ready and open source files to you.
Can you design packaging for a product that is not manufactured yet?
Yes, as long as the container dimensions or the printer's dieline are fixed. Designing before the format is final usually means redoing the artwork later.
Do you handle the printing?
No. You work with your own printer, and we prepare the artwork to their dieline and specification. If a technical term or a file question from the printer gets in the way, we help you sort it out.
